Jessica the Hippo is a world-renowned hippo residing in the river near Hoedspruit. Raised by her owners, Tonie and Shirley Joubert, as if she were their own child, Jessica’s story began when her mother was found exhausted at the edge of Kruger Park. With his background as a ranger, Tonie Joubert knew how to nurse Jessica back to health, and he succeeded beautifully.
Though Jessica is free to roam wherever she pleases, she often chooses her favorite spot on the sidewalk outside the Joubert home. Jessica sleeps inside their house and is known to be friendly and approachable. Weighing approximately 1.2 tons, she has undoubtedly become one of the world’s most famous hippos, capturing media attention and appearing in over 90 films and documentaries.
